Magnitude 7.2 earthquake hits Visayas

CEBU - A strong 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck parts of Visayas last October 15, 2013, mainly damaging Bohol, Cebu, Negros, Leyte, Samar and neighboring towns.

The epicenter of the quake points 20 km south of Carmen, Bohol. Later, PHIVOLCS suggested that the epicenter was at Maribojoc, Bohol and added that the culprit might not be the alleged Bohol Fault System, but an undiscovered one. Historical sites and churches, Baclayon Church among others, were heavily destroyed.

The quake, strongest to hit Visayas, started at 8:12 AM and lasted for an estimated 38 seconds.

As of October 28, 2013, death toll registered 213 and over four hundred are injured.

The provinces of Cebu and Davao had been declared under the State of Calamity hours after the quake wrecked havoc.
